Pterygium Excision and Graft

Pterygium Excision and Graft is a minor outpatient eye procedure used to treat pterygium -a non-cancerous growth of conjunctival tissue encroaching onto the cornea. While often caused by prolonged UV exposure or irritants like dust and wind, advanced cases may affect vision, cause chronic irritation, or lead to cosmetic concerns. The surgery involves removing the pterygium and transplanting healthy conjunctiva (usually from under the upper eyelid) to the affected site to reduce recurrence. Fibrin glue or sutures may secure the graft. Healing is typically rapid, with mild discomfort and redness resolving in days. It not only improves visual clarity and comfort but also significantly enhances cosmetic appearance ([American Academy of Ophthalmology, 2024] ).
